The Dead or Alive fighting game series is more often associated with anime-style fan service than with strategy and pinpoint execution – this has hampered the game’s reputation and has led to it being dismissed by fans of other fighter franchises. But with the debut of its official tournament series, Battle Royal, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja are hoping to change that perception.

Battle Royal 2015 splits a USD 10,000 prize pool over a 12-tournament season exclusively featuring Dead or Alive 5: Last Round, the latest installment of the franchise. It culminates in the Grand Finals at NEC (Northeast Championship) XVI, to be held at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center in Essington, Pennsylvania, USA.

1st-placers in Winter Brawl 9, Final Round 18, Socal Regionals, and The Fall Classic will not only pocket the tournament prize money and pot bonuses, but will also get free air fare, accomodations, and event registration for the Grand Finals. 2 other players who manage to accumulate enough Grand Finals points from NorCal Regionals, East Coast Throwdown, EVO, Summer Jam 9, Absolute Battle, GUTS, and Paradise will be accorded the same benefits.

Not only that, the overall winner receives a free pass into next year’s Grand Finals as well (a clause the Capcom Pro Tour should seriously think about implementing).

This is considerably more generous compared to last year’s Road to The Fall Classic, a Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate tournament series that was limited to 4 qualifier events (DoA in Dallas 10, Summer Jam 8, Cali Crush 2014, and GUTS 3) and only sponsored 4 players.

The great thing about this heightened community support is that, in the hopes of winning fame and fortune, players get more serious about understanding the game’s fundamentals, which in turn leads to the discovery of advanced footwork, combos, mixups, and setups – known as ‘tech’ in the FGC. When this tech is shared to the world via tutorials, tournament streams and videos, the fanbase for the game matures and expands at the same time, assuring a receptive audience for future installments of the franchise.
